Christmas in the Seychelles

We spent Christmas morning on the beach in the middle of the Indian Ocean on the tiny island of La Digue, in the Seychelles. This was a place we had dreamed about – a tropical retreat, secluded from the rest of the world, and more remote than any other destination on our trip itinerary. The beauty of the island and the incredible beaches lived up to our expectations and beyond.

After our relaxing morning, we headed into the center of “town” where we proceeded to spend the next hour and a half trying to steal Wi-Fi from the one café on the entire island where they have a connection. We wanted to talk to our families, what with it being Christmas and all. It was a frustrating effort, a spotty connection and calls that had to end way too soon.

This is our new reality. On the one hand, we are getting to enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world and fulfill our dreams. On the other hand, we’re missing holidays and milestones back home. We know how lucky we are to be on this journey, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get homesick sometimes!

We tried to get in the Christmas spirit. We put on the Mariah Carey Christmas album, watched “Home Alone” and enjoyed the few decorations they had put up in town. In the end, being in 90 degree weather and eating a spaghetti dinner (one of our go-to, budget meals) didn’t ever quite feel like the holiday we know and love. But, maybe that’s the beauty of this trip. We are moving around a ton and not getting settled in anywhere. We are learning to stop trying to recreate our home, but instead to embrace where we are. We’re eating unfamiliar food and learning about new cultures. Our world for the next eight to ten months will be new, different, amazing, uncomfortable, incredible, scary, exciting, and everything in between.

So, Merry late Christmas, everyone! Know that we were thinking of you from across the globe and no weak Wi-Fi connection could stop us from sending you our holiday wishes!

This is about as perfect a formula for happiness as I’ve ever heard: “We are learning to stop trying to recreate our home, but instead to embrace where we are.” And maybe bad WiFi is part of that learning.

In the future, we’ll clink coconuts when we toast you.

    Peace be the journey.
